Garlic scapes try to reinvent cursive. Then Melissa snips them off and they become pesto. It's a delicious summer in Maine. Yesterday: lunch on the docks in Belfast and a Reny's run. Bought a water cannon called The Equalizer. Humans vs chipmunks. Work has turned kind of weird with a supervisor who thinks sleep deprivation and Red Bull make for good implementation decisions. Boreal Tordu played here recently; they're a Maine band with French roots. Notice the Acadian flag at the back of the stage. In Louisiana I never heard the phrase "Franco-American." We were just French or cajun; maybe it was because we were the dominant culture in our part of the state. But in Maine there's a lot of defensiveness and anger about being French; their experience has obviously been different than mine. Brett Favre and John James Audubon, Henry David Thoreau and Jack Kerouac. Famous Franco-Americans. Robert Sylvain sings this song he wrote about a book by Kerouac called "Visions of Gerard." He says Kerouac grew up in a French ghetto in Lowell.
