Newport Folk Fest 2009. Colleen and David came up from New Orleans for this adventure. We stayed in Jamestown and took a ferry or water taxi to Fort Adams both days. No driving. That's why most of the pictures I took are of water or docks or boats. Jamestown is a quiet town with a lot of restaurants one of which had a Tiki Bar. I could go back there any time just for the comfortable guest house, the food and the boat rides.

We heard a lot of good music and I can check several people off my folk performer life list. Heard sets by Billy Bragg, Neko Case, Low Anthem, Fleet Foxes, Decemberists, Tift Merritt, Gillian Welch, Josh Ritter, the Campbell Brothers. And then there were the old folks: Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger. The back up band for them was a mix of The Mammals and Balfa Toujours. Dirk Powell can play anything. At the end on Sunday evening there were about 40 people on stage. Then we took the boat back to Jamestown as fog was playing with the lights of the bridge. "Thank god the Tiki bar is open. Thank god the Tiki torch still shines." -- John Hiatt

The long ride to and from Newport was a good time to play with my new Android phone, the unfortunately named MyTouch. Can I just call it the G2? Very slick, great apps for it, and the calendar and contacts integrate with Google calendar and contacts. Melissa inherited my Blackberry Curve and is busy learning it.

On the August Mix there are four we heard at Newport, a new New Orleans guy, Alex McMurray, who reminds me of Randy Newman, four new women folkie voices, and old timers Buffy and Franks.
