The ice went out a week ago on Easter Sunday. Somehow appropriate even for someone as radically secular as I am. And now a week later, it's sunny and 53 degrees and I'm wearing shorts. Robins are using the bag of cat fur tacked to the garden fence to line their nests. Osprey have returned to their nests on the big utility poles. Clothes is hanging on the line. Wing just went for her first chilly swim. Clothes are packed for JazzFest. Melissa's new strawberry bed is awaiting soil. Crocuses are waving their flags.
I saw the descriptor Radically Secular in this piece on Easter. I like the way the phrase delivers you out of arguments about religion. You let everyone honor what they want to, let yourself honor your past, but you simply declare yourself a non-combatant, a conscientious objector in the war of conflicting beliefs. And it means that you put your energy into civic areas, the commons shared by people of all beliefs. The lineup for Newport Folk (50th anniversary) is just out. Great combination of old and new. We will be in that number: Pete Seeger, The Decemberists, Arlo Guthrie, Fleet Foxes, Joan Baez, Neko Case, Judy Collins, Campbell Brothers, The Avett Brothers, Josh Ritter, Gillian Welch, Del McCoury, Iron & Wine, Tao Rodriguez Seeger, Balfa Toujours, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Tim Eriksen & Shape Note Singers, Langhorne Slim, Ben Kweller, Low Anthem Another origami rhubarb leaf unfolding.
