December 30, 2007 | Email | Feedback | Calendar | Archives

On this the last day of 2007, there are now seven P's marked on the December calendar, one for each time we were plowed. We've never seen a December as snowy as this. We got about 10 inches today and we'll be looking at another 8 to 12 Wednesday morning. We paid for 10 plowings in advance, and in some winters that would have done it. We switched the plow contract to some young guys who were just going into the business. They are seen around town smiling a lot. They do a good job and follow the rules: don't plow under 5 inches; plow after the storm is done. We were walking up to the mailbox this morning and got a neighbor to take this picture.

The January Mix says make yourself a new suit, get a new kinda groove for the New Year. It's got some Hebrew hip-hop and a JT song I never heard before. I'm going to do the mix thing again in the new year, but limit it to people who give feedback. It's a conversation about music. I love end of the year lists of best stuff. No Depression, a folk-plus music magazine, lists the best 50 albums of the year; I have at least half of them, but I'm largely unaware of most pop music. Offbeat Magazine's best of Louisiana CD's List is a good one; their reviews come out of a familiar sensibility. So many niches to visit, so little time.

Having finished the first book of the Dark Materials trilogy, I felt I was ready for a dæmon. Answered a few questions (lying is very much in the spirit of the book) at the website and voila here's my guy. I'm halfway through the second book. Cause it's winter. I was writing a work email today describing some proposed changes to our system and was amused by how similar it was to fantasy. Ojects that magically know who you are when you're in the online world.
