It's going to take me years to get Susan Pierce's barn right. This is my first shot of it. It's one of those intense texture swatches you find on back roads in Maine. We had lunch at Susan's today in Northport on one of those brilliant days and walked on her road with a couple of her neighbors. Susan has recently returned from a month in Russia so you can tell which one she is. Yesterday was Unity Barn Raisers' Annual Retreat. We sat in the big sunny room at the Community Center and thought about where we're going and what projects should get the most attention in the coming year. I'm pleased to be a part of the group. Melissa catered breakfast and lunch. When we sell the Heron someday, the first thing I will do is buy a small building downtown for an office because I love being a part of downtown. This year I resolve to do one trail activity every month, starting this month. The winter commute to work wears me down until there's not much energy left for projects. We still have only 56K modems here, although I'm hoping the phone company comes through with DSL soon. The work I'm doing, database driven web apps in Java, is just not easily done over a slow connection, so I only work at home when the weather really sucks. My sister Ingrid called this morning and we planned a couple of things about the JazzFest trip and the Gulf Shores weekend, this between walks on the lake with the dogs. I love anticipating the spring trip, making little plans. It's just delicious to think about in mid-winter. It's becoming common to see flocks of wild turkeys along the road or in fields here. We passed these today. Melissa has seen a flock of 15 in the Heron's back yard where they elect one of their number to knock the seed out of the feeders then scarf it up on the ground.
I always own about 5 pen knives, the smallest ones with the scissors, but I can never find more than two of them at a time. I name them after cities where I bought them. I brought Zippy in for a tune up last week and asked them to open the shift console. Quebec and Covington were returned to me.
