In between sleeping and naps (some kind of hibernation thing has kicked in) we go out on the ice a lot. This morning I took these shots of ice fishing hut and shore chair cluster. I thought the newspaper siding was a nice touch. Wish I had noted the dates. In a little bit we'll go out for a ski. We'll collect Carol and her dogs on the way and the pack will swirl around for a couple of miles. It has warmed up into the 20's this weekend after a week of hovering between 10 below and 10 above. Feels like summer out there after 0 with a wind. We need a fresh snow storm, complete with a snow day.
Trying to catch up on Things I Said I Would Do. If I don't do them, I lose credibility with myself. Putting up a web site for the Lake Association, and trying to get a newsletter together for them. Between naps.
Starting to think about shopping for a new vehicle...takes me about a year. Here's what I need: sun roof, XM radio/MP3 player, 50 mpg, front wheel or all wheel drive, room in the back for two dogs, rear window washer. Any suggestions? If the Honda CRV or Suburu Forester had hybrid models, that would work. Ford is supposed to come out with a hybrid version of their Escape model this year.
Reading Stanislaw Lem's Solaris, a 1961 novel that has recently been moviefied. It has people in it. Other things by him like Mortal Engines are about robots interacting and they put a chill in the room as you read. Solaris has an intelligent colloidal ocean in it; that's Lem's real interest. On deck next is Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones, not something I'd usually read, but on the back, Anna Quindlen compares it to To Kill a Mockingbird and that pushed me over the edge.
Putting up a Kim Richey cut as the MP3 download. The voice reminds me of Catie Curtis, the songwriting of Lucinda Williams. Here's Everything I Have. Need to do some housecleaning and nuke some stuff I don't really like. Thanks to Jean Carr for contributing to a new MP3 player for my commute. The winter commute is made bearable only by rousing tunes. Steve Earle's Jerusalem is playing on World Cafe as I write this.
Bean's warehouse sale in H20ville Friday. For $159.63 we bought a pair of hiking boots, a pair of X-country ski boots, a dog bed cover, 3 pairs of pants (one flannel lined!), a sweater, and 8 shirts. We go for the sport of it also: Plan ahead, focus, then edit yourself while standing in the checkout line.
