As of the 7:04 am solstice moment, it's officialy winter and it's coming in as a foot and a half of snow. On this snowy afternoon, Melissa, Jayne, Reilly, and Jennifer were elving in the kitchen, cranking out a gazillion cookies while watching Polar Express twice.

The JazzFest performer list came out this week, way early. Waiting for it is part of my late winter ritual, not my winter solstice ritual which mostly has to do with avoiding toxic christmas music. Well, since it's out there, here are some scheduled performers I need to check off on my seen 'em live list: Spoon, Wilco, Marc Broussard, Mavis Staples, Drive By Truckers, Amanda Shaw, Solomon Burke, Patty Griffin, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Guy Clark, Kings of Leon.

This Six Degrees of Barack Obama graphic is fun.

It sifts from Leaden Sieves --
It powders all the Wood.
It fills with Alabaster Wool
The Wrinkles of the Road --

It makes an Even Face --
Of Mountain, and of Plain --
Unbroken Forehead from the East
Unto the East again --

It reaches to the Fence --
It wraps it Rail by Rail
Till it is lost in Fleeces --
It deals Celestial Vail

To Stump, and Stack -- and Stem --
A Summer's empty Room --
Acres of Joints, where Harvests were,
Recordless, but for them --

It Ruffles Wrists of Posts
As Ankles of a Queen --
Then stills its Artisans -- like Ghosts --
Denying they have been --
