The star of our weekend was an oven at Jennifer and Steve's place on Oak Pond where we stayed Saturday night in the guest cottage which had undergone a four year renovation. Steve is an artisan builder and the cottage is a gem. Oak cabinets made from a tree on their property, Milt Christiansen paintings, a kitchen with wrap around windows, every knob and appurtenance carefully selected, every door handmade. The oven is installed on a curved polished concrete countertop that sits on a stone wall base. Lots of room for cooks to chop and roll out dough. The fire gets pushed to the back and sides of the oven and the food goes in front. We made pizza in it on Saturday night and on Sunday morning Melissa used it for biscuits and maple sausage. Last winter Steve helped Camden, the giant organic boy, refurbish an old classy Ranger rowboat. Steve said the paint for the hull cost more than he paid for the boat.

Sunday morning we did the foliage stretch up the Kennebec between Skowhegan and the top of Wyman Lake. Impossible to capture, but great fun trying.

On the October Mix there are several cuts from newly released albums. Anders Osborne channels Tom Waits on "Summertime in New Orleans." Usually he channels Van Morrison. The remix of the Billy Holiday song is from the second album in the Remixed and Reimagined series; the first is Nina Simone.
