Various electronic doodahs are hooked up to their rechargers here at the lake, and I am plugged into some rainy Sunday quiet as well. The Heron is in its summer busy time, and we are anticipating the Return of the Weekend, including the occasional Three Day Weekend and other forms of Normal Life which should be ours in about three weeks when we go to closing on the sale of the B&B. We have an offer in on a small commercial building on Main Street built in 1830 and in need of a lot of love. If we don't get it, we'll look at other properties in the village, because we need an office downtown where DSL will hopefully be available in the next few months. Preparatory to the Heron's sale, we have sorted out dishes and other items. The furniture is part of the business, so it goes with the sale, but we keep anything hanging on the walls. We kept the Unity Pond Pottery dishes and an old set of Dansk flatware to use at the lake. It's a real pleasure to have these in daily use. We're putting a lot of work into the gardens at the lake, and we're planning for some changes here, converting the deck into a screen porch with glass panels up top and just screen below, ripping out carpet in some areas and replacing with hardwood floors and rugs.
Yesterday we went to the annual conference of lake associations in Orono, although it was painful to give up a sunny Saturday. We were representing our lake association, but we also went because Melissa's next thing will probably be involvement in lake/watershed protection as grant administrator for some local outfits or as an employee of a conservancy or state agency. Maine has 6,000 lakes; there's a lot to protect.
