Raspberries for breakfast, yum! Tis the season, and Shirley's raspberry patch is having a good year. For dessert, it's raspberries with just a splash of cream.
What, no company this week? Last week Vee, Ellen and Michael were here. We ate a lot of lobster and had some adventures. One day Vee, Melissa and I wandered down through Liberty, to Union (lunch at Hannibal's, a great little restaurant in the middle of nowhere), to Damariscotta on the coast. I love the winding, hilly, shady roads on that route. That same description makes it deadly in the winter. But it ain't winter, campers, we've got a whole month of deep summer to go.  While Vee et al were here, Four Bitchin Babes played at the theater and half of them stayed with us.
The composition of the Babes has changed over the years and now includes Suzzy Roche of the Roches. I am in awe of her and kept thinking Wow Suzzy Roche is in our kitchen. Among the Babes, she lives on the most interesting planet by far, a charming planet, wistful but steely.
Heron guests meet Louisiana guests meet theater guests meet locals. All this interesting mingling peaked Saturday morning when Suzzy Roche met the Egg Man. Don the Egg Man, who has a thick Maine accent and looks like he's just been peeled, was bringing Melissa her usual six dozen. Various sizes, some brown and speckled, some green. She had to see the collection he had in the car and get the explanation of how hens come preloaded with all the eggs they'll ever lay. While Vee was here Lou and David Hayden wandered up and we had dinner at BreadBox Cafe, where they make carefully laid out salads and a hot loaf of bread with an olive oil dredging sauce. Lobster on the deck is good. Here's Vee scoping out hers. 
With Vee and Ellen here, it was possible to have a meaningful discussion as to whether Scout looks like Larry Lemon. |
